Allendale Chimneys

On moorland summit between East and West Allendales, reached via public footpath.

These prominent chimneys mark the end of two separate flues from the Allen Smeltmill which are respectively 4451 and 4338 yards long. They are the longest and best preserved flues in the North Pennines, intact in many places and containing many of their original features. However, the chimneys were badly damaged by lightning and the weather.

Status: Recommended for scheduling as ancient monuments.

Work carried out: Stage I (1994) repair of split caused by lightning strike to the tallest chimney; Stage II (1996) rebuilding of both chimneys using salvaged stone from the site.

Work to be carried out: Restoration of some of the flues and production of interpretative display.
