OS Map: 80Grid Reference: NY838611
On open moorland, approximately 200m SW of B6305.
This isolated 100ft (30m) chimney was an essential part of the 19thC lead mining industry of the North Pennines. A flue, over a mile long, connected it to the smelt mill at Langley. The Langley mill was built in 1768 for the London Lead Company to smelt their lead ore from Alston Moor. The designers were John Smeaton and Nicolas Walton. When the chimney was half finished, the mason, Nicolas White of Catton, went on strike for an increase on his eighteen shillings (90p) weekly wage. For two years no work was done then, on being granted a two shillings (10p) increase he completed the chimney.
