Visit Carr's Mine In July 2000, Carr's Level was opened to the public. The level is part of an extensive underground network of tunnels and workings around Nenthead from which miners extracted lead and, later, zinc over a period of at least three centuries.Early mining activity was carried out by groups of 'adventurers' including Adam Wilkinson and Mrs Mary Lorraine, then later by the London Lead Company and finally the Vieille Montagne Zinc Company. The entrance to the mine today is through the 'horse level' built by the London Lead Company in about 1815 and visitors can follow tunnels and tramways, along which horses once hauled the ore, to see typical North Pennine 18th and 19th century stope and flat workings. There are many other interesting features to be seen on the underground visit, which provides a spectacular insight into what was once one of the most productive mines in the country.
